Youth perceive draft law on foreign agents as authorities’ message that they can turn Georgia into Russia - political scientist Vasadze
The main message of the protests that have began in the Georgian capital Tbilisi is that it will never be Russia
Georgian political scientist Gela Vasadze shared his opinions with Espreso TV.
"A large rally is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Tbilisi. This is not an opposition rally, but a protest rally. A significant part of the protest is made up of young people, and this is very dangerous for the authorities, because Georgia has a special attitude towards young people (under 30). Everyone who has parents is a child," he said.
The political scientist added that when a protest is dispersed in Georgia, it does not go away.
"The authorities thought that they would pass this law - it does not apply to the population, but to non-governmental organizations and the media. They believed that there would be no such protests - it was a very unpleasant surprise for the authorities. The main message is that we will never be Russia. The bill itself is quite vegetarian. Young people took it as a clear message from the authorities that they can do whatever they want and turn Georgia into Russia. No, they can't. International partners, non-governmental organizations, and the opposition told them this, but the government did not listen. Now young people are telling them this," the political scientist summarized.
