Lithuania proposes police for Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
The Deputy Commissioner General of the Lithuanian Police, Arunas Paulauskas, suggested at the UNCOPS summit, that a permanent police force be deployed to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
This was reported by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Lithuania supports the establishment of a long-term mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, where the UN police could contribute by ensuring its physical security", Paulauskas explained.
He added that despite the remoteness of the war in Ukraine for some countries, "nuclear incidents do not respect national borders".
"The Russian military controls and uses for military purposes one of the four nuclear power plants in Ukraine. A nuclear incident there would pose a threat even to the most remote countries of the world", the representative of Lithuania emphasized.
Paulauskas added that Lithuania is ready to take an active part in such a UN police mission and send its law enforcement officers to this.
