Lithuania agrees to take 2,000 Ukrainian refugees from Moldova
Lithuania is ready to resettle up to 2,000 Ukrainians who fled to Moldova following Russia's assault on Ukraine
This was stated by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Agnė Bilotaitė, during her visit to Moldova, European Pravda reports.
Bilotaitė said that this issue was one of the topics of discussion with her Moldovan colleague.
"We are ready to help Moldova in whatever way we can - by relocating Ukrainians to Lithuania, strengthening joint efforts to fight crime, particularly human trafficking, as well as supporting Moldova on its way to the EU", the minister said.
Lithuania has provided additional humanitarian aid to Moldova worth about EUR 500,000 to support Ukrainians who have temporarily settled in the country.
Currently, there are about 100,000 Ukrainians in Moldova who left abroad because of Russia's war in Ukraine. A few hundred more of those who first arrived in Moldova, transited further into Europe.
According to the Lithuanian Migration Department, more than 50,000 Ukrainians arrived in the country at the beginning of the summer. In June, a noticeable increase in the number of those returning home was reported.
