Kostyantyn Zhevago is not involved in Supreme Court’s corruption case, lawyers say
On August 3, Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) published information on serving a notice of suspicion to Kostyantyn Zhevago in the case of providing an unlawful benefit to the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
Kostyantyn Zhevago emphasizes that he has nothing to do with this case, as he informed the NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) back in May. He has also repeatedly stated that he is ready to assist the investigation in every way possible.
However, for more than 2 months, law enforcement agencies have not shown any desire to receive any explanations from Kostyantyn Zhevago.
"The delivery of the text of the notice of suspicion to the French police department actually took place in violation of Ukrainian law and the provisions of the Criminal Procedural Code (CPC). According to the provisions of the CPC of Ukraine, a notice of suspicion must be served on the day it is drawn up. The handed notice of suspicion itself is formal and does not contain any references to any evidence of Kostyantyn Zhevago's involvement in the case," said Natalia Pushina, Zhevago's lawyer.
For two months, detectives and prosecutors did not inform Kostyantyn Zhevago of the fact that a notice of suspicion had been issued. Although the investigation knew the contact details of both Zhevago and his lawyers.
According to Natalia Pushina, detectives and prosecutors had to follow the procedure - hand over the notice of suspicion in person. "Zhevago informed law enforcement officers about his place of residence. Therefore, they could have delivered the documents directly. However, they did not follow the procedure established by the legislation of Ukraine," added Natalia Pushina.
Kostyantyn Zhevago is ready to demonstrate his non-involvement in the events under investigation and reiterates his readiness to cooperate with the investigation in accordance with the Criminal Procedural Code of Ukraine.
