Information warfare is necessary, just like arms distribution in Kyiv – Oleksandr Olshansky
In 2017, the first wave of blocking Russian propaganda resources took place in Ukraine. Back then, the Russian social network Vkontakte was sanctioned. After the full-scale invasion, harmful resources are being blocked en masse
However, there is one big problem in this situation. All of these blockings can hardly be called legal and have little to do with human rights. Any lawyer can tell you this. Indeed, there is no relevant legislation in Ukraine, and in fact, the only tool for removing hostile resources from the Ukrainian information space is the Law on Sanctions, although this is not what the law itself is about.
According to Oleksandr Olshansky, who is known as the father of the Ukrainian Internet, this situation is fraught with considerable abuse.
"It should be done properly, adhering to the law. In the end, we need to figure this issue out so that it does not turn into a system and we do not become like Russia. We need to understand that these blocking mechanisms are dangerous - without a court decision, without any procedures," Oleksandr Olshansky comments to Espreso TV.
However, he also notes that the fact that Ukraine is at war should be kept in mind. The father of Ukrainian internet compares blocking enemy websites to distributing weapons to people in Kyiv when the occupying Russian forces were coming close.
"On the other hand, when people in Kyiv were given assault rifles, it was also dangerous. This is the price we pay for this war. As a society, we need to decide what is more important to us now, because there is no right solution in this situation."
During the war, the entrepreneur adds, not all actions can comply with the law, and most providers, in his opinion, agree with this.
"My stance is that I don't like it, but if it saves someone's life, I can tolerate it. If there are abuses, then legal procedures should be developed. This is even my position as a human being. If there is a website that, for example, collects information about the Ukrainian Armed Forces or spreads Russian propaganda, how can I say that blocking it is illegal? Well, it is, but shooting at our citizens is also illegal. Everyone reacts to this in much the same way," Olshansky says.
