This was reported by Ukraine's Ministry of Energy.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has endorsed Ukraine’s plans to expand its nuclear energy capacity, specifically the completion of units at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), and is prepared to offer technical support for the project," the statement reads.

The ministry also noted that Ukraine is in the final stages of negotiations with Bulgaria for reactor supplies. Construction could start once the Verkhovna Rada approves the necessary legislation.

Additionally, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi proposed launching a technical support mission to ensure the safe integration of new components into existing systems.

Completion of the Khmelnytskyi NPP

In June, it was reported that the completion of the Khmelnytskyi NPP would be financed through loans and Energoatom's own funds.

During a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada's Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko mentioned plans to secure loan funding for the Khmelnytskyi NPP project, alongside Energoatom's own resources. However, state guarantees for the loan are not currently under consideration. In June, there were also plans to sign an agreement to purchase two nuclear reactors from Bulgaria. These reactors are Russian-made and originally intended for the unfinished Belene NPP. The intention to make this purchase was first revealed in March 2023.

The Verkhovna Rada's Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services supported the first reading of the draft law on completing Power Units No. 3 and No. 4 at the Khmelnytskyi NPP.

  • Previously, it was reported that Energoatom, Ukraine's nuclear power agency, is preparing for the installation of equipment at the third power unit of the Khmelnytskyi NPP.
  • Additionally, Energoatom is constructing a residential area near the Khmelnytskyi NPP for employees from the Zaporizhzhia NPP, who will be involved in building the new power units at Khmelnytskyi NPP.
