Trump assigns envoy Kellogg to end war in Ukraine in 100 days — media
U.S. President Donald Trump has tasked Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, with ending the war within 100 days
The Wall Street Journal reports.
“Almost no one thinks he can do it - especially the Russians,” the post says.
According to the publication, Keith Kellogg's role as special envoy for the war in Ukraine, amid a series of appointments in Trump's administration, is an initial step in peace talks that U.S. President Trump intends to personally oversee.
It is noted that Kellogg has recently publicly supported the view that Ukraine can achieve victory on the battlefield against Russia with the help of the U.S. He welcomed the Biden administration's decision to provide Ukraine with more powerful weapons, stating that it gives Trump leverage for future negotiations, and suggested that more weapons for Ukraine could be used as a tool to pressure Moscow into negotiations.
Kellogg's former colleagues explain that he was appointed envoy to Ukraine after co-authoring a peace plan that criticized the Biden administration for the slow provision of military aid, while also accusing it of provoking Moscow by pushing Kyiv to join NATO.
The plan called for a ceasefire and conflict resolution through negotiations, using both "carrots and sticks" to force Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table.
- The day before, Donald Trump threatened Russian dictator Vladimir Putin with sanctions if he refused to negotiate on Ukraine.
