Zelenskyy at Davos Forum urges Europe to assert global leadership
On Tuesday, January 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Davos, Switzerland, and delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for Europe to take a leading role, stating that, after Donald Trump’s inauguration, global attention has been focused on Washington. "The world is questioning its relations with America, alliances, support, trade, and President Trump’s plans to end wars. But no one is asking such questions about Europe," Zelenskyy noted.
He challenged Europe’s passive role, saying, "When we see the U.S. as an indispensable ally, it is clear during war everyone worries if the U.S. will stand by them. But does anyone in the U.S. fear Europe might leave them? The answer is no."
Zelenskyy recalled the 2024 Asian Security Summit in Singapore, where U.S. representatives ranked the Indo-Pacific as their top security priority, followed by the Middle East, with Europe only in third place. He questioned whether Trump would prioritize Europe, value NATO, or respect EU institutions.
"Europe cannot afford to be second or third in the line for alliances. If it does, the world will move forward without Europe, creating a world unsuitable and unfavorable for Europeans. Europe must compete for leadership in priorities, alliances, and technological development," he asserted. "This is a turning point — some see it as a problem for Europe; others call it an opportunity. Europe must establish itself as a strong, indispensable global player."
Zelenskyy also highlighted Europe’s geographic proximity to Russia, pointing out that conflicts involving North Korean soldiers are occurring closer to Davos than Pyongyang. He warned that, despite having a smaller economic potential, Russia produces significantly more ammunition and military equipment than all of Europe combined. He called attention to Russia’s strategic partnerships with Iran and North Korea, describing them as threats against Europe and the broader international community.
"We must align our priorities to meet this challenge — politically, defensively, and economically," Zelenskyy urged, emphasizing the need for collective European action. He called for a unified approach to counter threats, support nations facing aggression, and aid in post-war recovery.
Earlier, Presidential press secretary Serhiy Nykyforov shared that Zelenskyy’s agenda at the forum includes bilateral talks with leaders from Latin America and Asia, as well as meetings with major business figures and participation in other events.
