Macron urges Europe to boost defense spending following Trump's presidency
French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Europe to "wake up" and increase defense spending to reduce its reliance on the United States for security following Trump's return to the White House

Macron emphasized that Europe must adapt to new threats and shifts in U.S. foreign policy priorities, particularly in the context of Ukraine. He described Trump’s inauguration as an “opportunity for a European strategic wake-up call.”
“What will we do in Europe tomorrow if our American ally withdraws its warships from the Mediterranean?" he asked. "If they send their fighter jets from the Atlantic to the Pacific?”
Additionally, the French leader highlighted the need for strategic foresight, referencing some of Trump’s recent statements.
“Who would have thought a year ago that Greenland would be at the centre of political and strategic debates? That’s the way it is,” Macron concluded.
