HIMARS is not the limit: Pentagon confirms provision of high-precision weapons to Ukraine
New USD 400 million US military aid package for Ukraine includes high-precision, long-range munitions.
The Washington Post writes about it.
The package contains four HIMARS artillery missile systems, as well as thousands of rounds of howitzer ammunition.
According to a senior Pentagon official, these projectiles are a new type of 155-mm howitzer ammunition that was delivered to Ukraine earlier, mainly M777 howitzers.
He declined to disclose the modifications to the projectiles for security reasons. But he clarified that they will increase Ukraine's ability to strike Russian military facilities.
The New York Times speculates that these could be the M982 Excalibur projectiles, which are guided by GPS, hit at 40 km with a tolerance of 1.8 m, or the M1156, also guided by GPS, but with a deviation of up to 15 m at a 27-28 km distance.
The Pentagon representative also noted that the accuracy will be higher than that of standard projectiles currently used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They are expected to be expended at a slower rate than 5,000-6,000 standard artillery rounds per day.
"The Ukrainians have asked for more precision capability, and HIMARS is not the limit of what the U.S. is able to provide them for precision capability," the US military added.
