Germany stops Spain from supplying Ukraine with Leopard tanks - Spiegel
Germany has stopped Spain from selling 40 old Leopard 2A4 tanks of its own production to Ukraine.
Spiegel reported the update.
According to German government sources, Berlin has blocked Madrid's plans to hand over about 40 modernized Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine. During telephone calls, representatives of Germany warned their Spanish counterparts that this step would be taken contrary to the apparent informal consensus among Western allies not to supply Ukraine with NATO armed tanks.
Business Insider claims that official Madrid even apologized to Berlin "for the worries and pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz" and did not even send a request for the supply of Leopards.
Spiegel suggests that Spain has not given up on its plans, but may reduce the number of tanks to 10. When Ukraine can get equipment is unclear, as the tanks are worn out and need several months of repairs.
