"Draw" with Russia will lead to its alliance with China against West
When an internal letter is leaked to the media, it is in someone’s interest. The letter from the head of European diplomacy, Borrell, was leaked to the Financial Times based on this principle
The letter is actually about China and is addressed to the EU foreign ministers. I agree with some of the conclusions of the letter, but I have to argue with some of them. And seriously so.
Borrell writes that Russia's defeat will not force China to change its course to dominate the world system. Moreover, he says that China will be able to gain geopolitical advantages from Russia's defeat. Both of these are straightforwardly false and even dangerous conclusions. It turns out that Russia's defeat strengthens China and creates more geopolitical problems than it solves, and if so, why shouldn't Europe and China play a "draw"?
“Russia's defeat will be our victory, but also a victory for the West and, unfortunately, for the non-West. And China will take into account all the lessons of this war both strategically and tactically”
Of course, I'm simplifying, but the logic is very dangerous. Russia's defeat will be our victory, but also a victory for the West and, unfortunately, for the non-West. And China will take into account all the lessons of this war both strategically and tactically.
Moreover, Russia's defeat cannot be only military, it must be comprehensive. Including a NATO-based security model for Ukraine, because otherwise it is not Russia's defeat. And there are no other reliable and stable models currently available.
Our response to Borrell's letter should be a very well-reasoned thesis that a "draw" with Russia will lead to its tactical alliance with China against the West, which will be difficult to talk to and even more difficult to deal with. And in the event of Russia's defeat, China will think a hundred times about what to do next. And maybe even more.
