Biden supports Taiwan

And the registration of the Taiwan Cooperation Support Group is blocked in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament), Mykola Kniazhytskyi writes.

US President Joe Biden said the US is ready to defend Taiwan in the event of an attack by China  Despite the fact that the US continues to support the concept of one China, that is, it does not support the existence of several Chinas. With Ukraine, the opposite is true. The US recognized Ukraine a long time ago, but the same Biden wrote that the US will not enter into a conflict with Russia if NATO members are not attacked.

It is obvious that the US helps Ukraine a lot, but for some reason they themselves are ready to fight for the Taiwanese, but not for the Ukrainians. This readiness can appear, and to a large extent it depends on us. Americans support Taiwan as a society that has built a democracy, the rule of law, where there is freedom of speech and protected human rights. A war with Taiwan is not a war with another nation, but an attempt to defeat the people who have built a strong democracy.

Ukraine is also a democratic country, but with weak democratic institutions. We can count on even greater support for democracies if we show an example of implementing the rule of law. Until it happened. Therefore, our army is an institution that enjoys the greatest trust both in society and abroad. It is clear that the army is fighting heroically. But in democracies, the same authority should be exercised by the president, parliament, courts, and independent media. And not some one of the three branches of power or the press, but all of them together. What should Ukraine do to receive the same support and protection from the US that Taiwan receives?

To stand in solidarity with the US. We in Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada created an inter-factional group "In support of friendship, trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation with Taiwan". We also do not question the policy of China alone, but we believe that the government has no right to build totalitarianism and commit genocide against minorities at the cost of citizens' lives. And they are convinced that democracies should support each other.

I am sorry that the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada does not announce, as required by the Law, the creation of our group in order for it to be registered. This process is closely watched in Taipei, which helps our army and the state a lot. They are also watching in Washington. I believe that we will be able to build democracy in Ukraine and learn the main thing: no conjunctural interests will ever justify flirting with tyrannies.
