A mass burial site for hundreds of people is discovered in liberated Izyum
In Izyum, recently freed from Russian occupation, police found a mass burial site after Russian troops withdrew
Oleg Kotenko, the Commissioner for Missing Persons, stated, "Nastoyastchee vremya" reports.
"It's not even near Izyum, it's a cemetery in Izyum itself. There is a video, they (occupation forces, ed.) posted this video when the city was occupied, and we understood that we need to find this place after we deoccupy this territory." - he said.
The crosses standing on the graves were made hastily, and the graves only have numbers. Some have surnames, some don't.
"When there were shellings and they captured Izyum, people died right on the streets. Funeral services did not know who these people were, but they were buried in this cemetery. I think that we will understand what kind of person this is, why he was assigned a number, and not a surname. But there are also surnames," Kotenko added.
He said that it is about hundreds of people.
"I don't want to call it Bucha - there are more, let's say, civilly buried people here. I don't even want to think about it, but I think there are also dead children there."
As President Volodymyr Zelenskyi noted, the necessary procedural actions have already begun there.
"On September 16, there will be Ukrainian and international journalists in Izyum. We want the world to know what is really happening and what the Russian occupation has led to. Bucha, Mariupol, now, unfortunately, Izyum. Russia is leaving behind death everywhere. And she must be responsible for it. The world must hold Russia to real responsibility for this war," Zelensky said in his speech.
