Slovak PM Fico accepts invitation to Moscow for May 9 celebrations
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has accepted an invitation from Russian leader Vladimir Putin to visit Moscow for official celebrations on 9 May
This was reported by Aktuality.
It is noted that Fico may become the first representative of Slovakia to travel to Russia since the beginning of the full-scale war against Ukraine.
The head of the Slovak government confirmed on social media that the Kremlin leader had officially invited him to Moscow on the occasion of the end of World War II in Europe, which Russians celebrate on May 9. Fico said that he ‘gladly accepted’ the offer.
The article reads: ‘Fico emphasized the role of the Red Army and the USSR in overthrowing fascism and winning the World War II. He added that Slovaks ‘recall with reverence and respect all the anniversaries and events associated with the liberation of our territory by the Red Army in 1944-1945.’
According to the prime minister, the Slovak government supports the legacy of the fight against fascism and the ‘historical truth’ about World War II and the role of the Red Army in it.
‘Therefore, also in 2025, the Slovak government will take care of organizing several events, culminating in the May celebrations of the victory over fascism. In the spirit of the above, it is natural that I, as Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, am extremely interested in participating in the official celebrations of the victory over fascism that will take place on 9 May 2025 in Moscow. Therefore, I am pleased to accept the official invitation of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to take part in these important celebrations, which I will do,’ Fico said.
- On October 3, Robert Fico announced his desire to restore ‘normal relations’ with Russia after the end of the war in Ukraine, adding that ‘the European Union needs the Russian Federation’.
