Not all energy facilities can be protected from Russian attacks - analyst
Andrian Prokip, an energy analyst at the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, said that some of the energy system's facilities cannot be protected, only air defence can be strengthened
He shared his opinion on Espreso TV.
‘The Western media began to write that we were unable to build protection for energy facilities, and therefore we may face huge problems in the winter, when the Russians can again shell our energy sector. However, the issue is that not all objects in the energy system can be protected. Power plants are almost impossible to protect. That is, no shelter can protect power plants. Substations, transformers, transmission system substations can be protected, but not power substations and machine rooms,’ Prokip explained.
According to the analyst, the Russians are always trying to attack such facilities in Ukraine's energy system.
‘A series of attacks, starting from March 22 this year until July, targeted generation facilities, including engine rooms. There is only one way to protect these energy system facilities — to strengthen air defenses. In addition, our partners promised to provide us with equipment for the energy system, but most of the promised equipment is not even in Ukraine yet. Therefore, it is very weird to accuse us of not being prepared for winter, while at the same time delaying air defense systems and equipment for us,’ he added.
