Zelenskyy's speech in US Congress is expected to help secure new funding package for Ukraine

During a virtual briefing, John Kirby stated that passing the additional package is absolutely crucial, so they will continue to engage with members of Congress.

He also stressed that the Biden administration has consistently kept members of the US Congress informed about aid to Ukraine over the past 18 months. However, Kirby made it clear that such assistance is not provided without thorough consultations with Congress, refuting claims of "blank checks" for Ukraine.

Kirby described the current situation in Ukraine as a "critical time" and highlighted the importance of President Zelenskyy's meeting with American lawmakers during his Washington visit. 

He stated that they believe it's vital for members of Congress to hear directly from President Zelenskyy about the challenges he's facing in this counteroffensive.

• Volodymyr Zelenskyy began his visit to the USA on Monday, September 18, participating in the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, addressing the Security Council, and holding meetings with foreign leaders.

• On September 21, Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit Washington, where he will address Congress and meet with President Joe Biden. The meeting between Zelenskyy and Biden was confirmed on September 15.
