NATO needs up to two years to boost Ukraine's armament, says Swedish Defense Minister
Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson stated that NATO countries will need up to two years to significantly increase weapon supplies to Ukraine
He made these comments in an interview with Bloomberg.
Jonson urged Western allies to double their procurement efforts, noting, "Russia has been quicker on its feet than the euro-Atlantic community."
"I expect us to be catching up but I think it will take a year or two until we see the full effect," Jonson said.
He emphasized the goal of securing a victory for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
"Now we have significantly more money, but we have less time because we’re very concerned that Russia will reconstitute itself and pose a military threat to the whole alliance," Jonson added, stating that Sweden carries added significance due to a defense industry that punches above its weight.
Sweden has already doubled its military spending since 2020 and plans to allocate 2.6% of its GDP to defense by 2030. However, this may not suffice in the short term against an adversary focusing its economy on the military.
- Recently, the Swedish government directed its armed forces to allocate €28 million to support Ukraine's defense, with €18 million going to three coalitions within the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
