Moldova's EU referendum results already known, official says
Anatol Șalaru, Moldova's Defense Minister from 2015 to 2016, announced that over 50% of Moldovans voted in favor of EU accession in the October 20 referendum
He shared this information with Espreso.
"The results of the referendum on Moldova joining the European Union are now clear. This was yesterday’s biggest event, October 20. While the election commission's website is currently blocked, about an hour ago, more than 50% of the votes were for EU membership — around 50.11% or 50.1%. Votes from the diaspora in America, where 80% consistently support a pro-European course and a pro-European president, are still expected. I spoke this morning with people who have access to the data, and the referendum has passed. What remains now is to win the presidential election, but the referendum has succeeded with a slim margin," Șalaru emphasized.
Șalaru explained that while the presidential elections are important, Moldova is a parliamentary republic, which limits the president's power. The more decisive elections will be the parliamentary ones next year.
On October 20, 2024, Moldova held a nationwide referendum on joining the EU. Preliminary results from the first round of the presidential elections show that incumbent President Maia Sandu and former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo are leading the race.
