The head of the Ukrainian American House, a founding rector of American University Kyiv, Roman Sheremeta, expressed confidence U.S. President Donald Trump would not abandon Ukraine, as doing so would signal his own defeat

In an interview with Espreso, Sheremeta noted:

“Trump has repeatedly emphasized his position on Ukraine and expressed his desire to end the war as soon as possible. At the same time, he is committed to his electorate and will make efforts to achieve this goal. In particular, Trump has already made a number of appointments to take certain steps to stabilize the situation. For example, Michael Waltz, Trump's adviser, emphasized the preparation of a telephone conversation between Putin and Trump, and also noted the need to stabilize the front,” Sheremeta said.

"Even if Trump attempted to give up Ukraine, Ukraine would not agree to such terms. Any ceasefire under unfavorable conditions for Ukraine would not work."

He added that Trump's promise to end the war within 24 hours risks becoming unfulfilled, which could damage his reputation:

"Trump has made a big statement, promising to end the war within 24 hours. If he fails to deliver, this will hurt him politically. He wouldn’t take such risks."

According to Sheremeta, Trump, who has a narcissistic personality, would not benefit from undermining Ukraine: "Trump is a narcissist. His only concern is his personal image. He will never do anything that could damage his own reputation, including betraying Ukraine."

However, Sheremeta does not exclude the possibility that Trump might pressure Ukraine to agree to less favorable terms: "It is likely he will push Ukraine to accept certain compromises. But Ukraine will stand its ground. We’ve already demonstrated our resilience and determination."

  • Russian leader Vladimir Putin said on Monday, January 20, that Moscow is open to dialogue with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump over the war in Ukraine.
  • Vadym Denysenko, Doctor of Historical Sciences, political analyst, believes that a telephone conversation between Trump and Putin may soon take place.
