War in Ukraine threatens 323 mln people with famine - UN
Executive Director of the United Nations’ World Food Program David Beasley said that 323 million people will starve if the war between Russia and Ukraine does not end soon
David Beasley posted the statement on twitter.
“We're facing unprecedented challenges to global food security. In the past year alone, conflict, the climate crisis, Covid & rising costs have pushed 276M people to the brink of starvation. If the Ukraine war doesn't end soon, that number could rise to 323M people,” he Tweeted.
Earlier, he said that it is urgent to open up the Odesa ports.
“If ports in the Odesa region do not open up immediately, two things will happen: First, we're going to have agricultural collapse across Ukraine. Second, famines will be looming all over the world. Food needs to move, ports must reopen and this needs to happen NOW" Beasley wrote.
