US submits resolution to Congress proposing to exclude Russia from the UN Security Council
US lawmakers leading independent government human rights group have introduced resolution calling on President Joe Biden to remove Russia from the UN Security Council.
Republican Steve Cohen, co-author of the resolution, stated this on Twitter.
"Russia has repeatedly, deliberately, and flagrantly violated the UN charter. Today, Joe Wilson and I introduced a bipartisan resolution to call for Russia to be removed from the UN Security Council," he said.
Resolution states that Russia has committed gross violations of the UN Charter, which call into question its right to hold a seat in the Security Council. It is about illegal voting on the annexation of four Ukrainian regions, committing atrocities in Ukrainian cities such as Bucha, threat of nuclear weapons and creation of risks to the world food supply.
Helsinki Commission resolution calls on President Joe Biden to order the State Department and other federal agencies to discuss with allies the possibility of "restricting, suspending or revoking rights and privileges that Russia has in the UN Security Council."
