US explains why there is no HIMARS in new Ukraine aid package
The Pentagon has said that the absence of HIMARS rocket launchers in the new US aid package for Ukraine is due to the fact that you don't need hundreds of them for an effective operation.
This is reported by the Pentagon's official website.
According to US Deputy Secretary of Defense Colin Kahl, HIMARS are not the systems needed to be effective by the hundreds.
"We have sent 16 HIMARS systems, which is actually quite a lot. These are not systems that need hundreds to have the necessary impact that they do. These are high-precision guided systems for very specific types of targets, and that's how the Ukrainians use them," said Kahl.
He added that Great Britain and Germany have committed to supply Ukraine with three systems similar to HIMARS - M270 and MARS II.
At the same time, Kahl emphasized that the new package will deliver GMLRS ammunition for HIMARS with a range of 70 km, the supply of which is a priority.
"The priority now is to ensure a continuous flow of GMLRS. The same applies to the M777 howitzers, where we have indeed delivered a very large number of systems. The priority task now is to provide the Ukrainians with ammunition so that they can continue the fight," said Kahl.
