UN does not recognize "referendum" as true expression of Ukrainians' choices - UN Under Secretary General for political affairs Dicarlo
Sham referendums held by Russia in the Ukrainian territories it temporarily occupies have nothing to do with Ukrainians' real interests, it is merely an attempt to add legitimacy to the Kremlin's attempts to seize part of another state.
This was stated by UN Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs Rosemary Dicarlo in a report during the meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Ukraine, reports Ukrinform.
According to her, the pseudo-referendums began on September 23, after the active phase of the armed conflict in the regions that were under the control of the occupying forces - outside the constitutional framework of Ukraine. And the representatives of the regime went "from door to door with ballot boxes" accompanied by armed soldiers.
"They ("voting", - ed.) cannot be called a true manifestation of the will of the people. Unilateral actions (of the occupying power, - ed.) are an attempt to add external legitimacy to attempts to seize the territory of another state by force," Dicarlo noted.
In its turn, the UN continues to support the need to preserve the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday, September 27, at the UN Security Council, said that it is only a matter of time before Russia destroys the last international institution that can still act. Also, Zelenskyy announced 5 violations of the international legal order by Russia and the only way to stop them.
