Ukrainian government reports on "significant steps to achieve all seven reform goals" on way to EU
The Ukrainian government, while reporting on the latest European integration reforms, did not comment on the signals from Brussels to change the law on the selection procedure of the Supreme Administrative Court judges, so that the latest recommendations of the Venice Commission are considered
The law is mentioned in the op-ed of the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration Olha Stefanishyna for Politico, in which she tells about Ukraine's European integration achievements half a year after receiving candidate status.
In particular, the Vice Prime Minister notes that the government held consultations with interested parties in Ukraine, experts from the European Commission, the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission, and the process was also carefully monitored by the Ukrainian expert community. According to her, despite the difficulties in these negotiations, "we managed to find balanced positions on a number of key issues."
Stefanishyna mentions the adopted law on the Constitutional Court in the first place, avoiding to mention the remarks that came from the Ukrainian expert community and the European Commission.
“Ukraine’s parliament has amended the procedure for selecting judges to the Constitutional Court, introducing an ethics council of international and Ukrainian experts, responsible for reviewing candidates, assessing their record of moral conduct and their professional skills. For the first time, the selection will be on a competitive basis, transparent to the public and to Ukraine’s international partners," Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister wrote.
Earlier it became known that the Ukraine-EU summit will be held in Kyiv on February 3. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke by phone with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and promised Ukraine further support.
- On January 8, Olha Stefanishyna said that Ukraine expects an EU assessment regarding the implementation of the seven recommendations already this spring.
