Ukrainian Air Force explains for what purposes Russia uses Kinzhal missiles and whether it is possible to shoot them down
Kinzhal ballistic missiles, which the Russian army used during a massive missile attack on January 26, are designed to hit strategic targets in Ukraine.
Yuriy Ihnat, speaker of the Air Force command of Ukrainian Armed Forces, stated this live on air of a united national TV marathon on January 27.
"Putin flaunted Kinzhal missiles a lot, calling them hypersonic, just as he is now flaunting Zircon missiles. Russians have few Kinzhal missiles, so they save them for hitting large-scale strategic targets," he said.
According to him, during the missile attack on January 26, the most important targets for Russian occupying forces were one of the objects in Zaporizhzhia, as well as energy object in Kyiv.
Ignat emphasized that currently Ukraine cannot shoot down ballistic missiles.
"There are no such equipment that can detect and shoot down such high-speed missiles. Kinzhal is a missile that flies on a ballistic trajectory. MiG-31 aircraft delivers it to the upper layers of atmosphere, launches it there, and it already flies and descends at a huge speed on the target," the spokesman said.
- On January 26, Russian occupying forces launched another massive missile attack on Ukraine. 55 missiles were launched (two of them Kinzhal missiles). Ukrainian air defense shot down 47 missiles.
