Ukraine's Foreign Affairs Minister comments on Patriot systems supply to Ukraine
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba shares the story of Ukraine receiving Patriot air defense systems from the US
Dmytro Kuleba shared the story in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
"We want to have the cake and eat it too. We fought for getting Patriot systems for more than a year. Now, once we have them, everyone says that getting Patriot is great, of course, but what about tanks and ATACMS? Once we get tanks and ATACMS, I think they will say that this is certainly great, but what about aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines, when will we get them?" Kuleba said.
The minister said that Ukraine had been asking the US for Patriot systems for quite a long time, but Washington denied these requests. The supply now shows that another taboo has been lifted.
As for other weapons, the negotiations will be more difficult, as they contain complex and expensive technology.
"They are not realized all at the same time in one day. It's like in a computer game, you open levels one by one. I am not saying that we will get all the weapons in a week or a month, but I do not expect anything more difficult than the Patriot negotiations," the minister stressed.
Kuleba notes that the European allies of the US in NATO are still guided by the US' decision. This was the case with artillery and HIMARS supply. Once the US made the decision to supply the weapons, EU countries also agreed.
After the transfer of Patriot systems from the United States takes place, Ukraine will discuss supplies with other European allies.
- On December 21, the United States announced the decision to transfer Patriot systems to Ukraine. The Patriot air defense system is capable of shooting down cruise missiles, short-range ballistic missiles and aircraft at a much higher altitude than the air defense systems previously provided to Ukraine.
