"Direct path to surrender to Russia": Portnykov identifies a key factor in the war
Journalist Vitaliy Portnykov explained that since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has consistently tried to erode Ukrainians' belief in resisting aggression, knowing that such a loss of morale could significantly alter the course of the war
He shared this perspective on Espreso TV.
"From the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion, what really frustrated them was that people in Ukraine could still live somewhat normal lives. I always tell those who say, 'People in the rear are going to cafes and theaters while it's hell at the front' — this contrast is actually our greatest weapon. It shows that the Russians have failed," Portnykov said.
He explained that Russia’s primary objective from the outset has been to create unbearable living conditions across Ukraine. This, Portnykov argued, is aimed at breaking Ukrainians' spirit and discouraging resistance to Russian aggression.
"If all of Ukraine falls into a constant state of mourning, where every day feels like the brink of collapse, that’s a straight road to surrendering to Russia. That’s exactly what they want — to drain us until we crave a so-called 'normal' life, like being able to go to a café without fear of shelling, visit a cinema, or take a peaceful walk with our kids. What does Russia want? They won’t stop bombing us until we agree to be part of their Federation. According to their plan, the only way Ukrainians can imagine a normal life is under their flag. If we give in to this thinking, it’s surrender, plain and simple," Portnykov emphasized.
