Ukraine-Russia negotiations are now impossible - John Herbst
On the air of the Spotlight Ukraine program, John E. Herbst, director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, talked about whether negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are possible now and whether the West is weary of Ukraine
This was reported on Spotlight Ukraine | Espreso TV Channel.
John E. Herbst, the senior director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center believes that although the war will be ended in a diplomatic way, negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are now impossible, because Russia is still trying to impose its political will.
“The war of Russian aggression will be resolved through a diplomatic process. But right now Moscow's aim is still to impose its political will on Ukraine. So Russia is not interested in real negotiations. Ukraine is conducting a successful counteroffensive in the east and the south, and the US and the West should provide all the weapons Ukraine needs to make this counteroffensive as successful as possible. Once Ukraine has taken a lot more territory back from Russia, Putin may realize that he must make peace on just terms. But right now he is interested in negotiations in which Ukraine would give him land that he has conquered, and this is unacceptable,” John Edward Herbst said.
The American diplomat believes that Ukraine will continue to receive bipartisan support from the United States.
“I think the large Western support for Ukraine will remain strong. There was some talk about the Trump wing of the Republican Party doing well in these elections and insisting on dropping, but the Republicans didn't do very well in the elections, and the Trump wing of the Republican Party did even worse. So, I'm confident that the American support over the next two years will continue at least as strong as it is today. I would like us to do more, but I think at least we will not do less,” he noted.
