Pollution of Seim River stopped - State Environmental Inspectorate in Chernihiv region
Serhii Zhuk, head of the State Ecological Inspectorate in the Chernihiv region, says that the flow of pollutants into the Seim River has stopped
He said this on Espreso TV.
"I can report that as of today, the pollution of the Seim River has stopped. The water condition in the river has significantly improved. We can assume that the flow of pollutants into the Seim River has stopped. The river is gradually being cleaned, and oxygen levels have returned to normal. There is some sediment at the bottom of the river, however, all water quality indicators are within normal limits," said Zhuk.
He also said that pollution in the Desna River is moving toward Kyiv.
"The pollution continues to move along the Desna River. The peak of contamination of this river has passed through the territory of Chernihiv and is going down towards Kyiv. At the moment, we can assume that the peak pollution of the Desna River is located near the village of Shestovytsia, 15-20 km from Chernihiv, and is moving towards Kyiv. The first signs of pollution can be observed near the village of Oster, which is 20-25 km from Kyiv region," he added.
- According to the Ministry of Environment, 29.5 tons of fish died in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions due to pollution of the Seim and Desna Rivers.
- On September 11, Svitlana Hrynchuk, head of the Ministry of Environment, reported that the amount of environmental damage in the Chernihiv and Sumy regions due to the pollution of the Seim and Desna Rivers exceeds UAH 405 million. The polluted water is now moving toward the border with the Kyiv region.
