UK to help Ukraine create tribunal for Putin
The UK has offered legal support for the establishment of a tribunal that will bring Russian civilian and military leaders, including Vladimir Putin, to justice for war crimes in Ukraine
According to the Guardian, the campaign to create a specialized court was led by British lawyer Philippe Sands and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said that Russia's war crimes should not go unpunished. That is why the UK accepted Ukraine's invitation to join the tribunal, offering legal expertise.
Geoffrey Nice, the lead prosecutor at the Slobodan Milosevic trial, said that he "firmly believes that anything that is done in terms of accountability should be done by Ukrainians, in Ukraine, in Ukrainian and Russian."
According to him, international experts can advise, but they should not be allowed to lead the process. Nice emphasized that this would help Ukraine avoid potential international pressure in making any decisions related to the trials.
On January 18, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of an international tribunal for the crimes of aggression of Russia and Belarus against Ukraine.
