"There is no clear strategy to bring this war to a close": far-right Republicans call on Biden to stop helping Ukraine
A group of 19 far-right Republicans has appealed to US President Joe Biden and called for an end to military aid to Ukraine
This is stated in a letter published on the official page of one of the signatories, Senator Michael Lee.
The document states that the war in Ukraine is already in its second year, but "there is no clear strategy to bring this war to a close."
"We are deeply concerned that the trajectory of U.S. aid to the Ukrainian war effort threatens further escalation and lacks much-needed strategic clarity," it said.
The Republicans called the aid to Ukraine "unlimited" and said it should be stopped because it "risks an escalation" and "could lead to direct conflict between the United States and Russia."
"A proxy war with Russia in Ukraine is not in the strategic interest of the United States and risks an escalation that could spiral out of control," the statement said.
The authors accuse the Biden administration of "settling in for a long-term conflict" and that the current strategy of sanctions against Russia and aid to the Ukrainian state is only prolonging the war. They called for a clear diplomatic strategy aimed at bringing it to a rapid conclusion.
"We will adamantly oppose all future aid packages unless they are linked to a clear diplomatic strategy designed to bring this war to a rapid conclusion," the letter reads.
Republicans also consider the transfer of HIMARS systems and Abrams tanks to Ukraine a "provocation" and say that the transfer of intelligence information complicates attempts to deny Russia's arguments about the war in Ukraine.
"Russian tolerance for fighting a proxy war with NATO could run out at any point," the signatories said.
In addition, they accused the White House of helping Ukraine "at the expense of U.S. military readiness."
The letter ends with a statement that Republicans will strongly oppose any future aid packages unless they are linked to a clear diplomatic strategy.
The letter was signed by 19 members of the House of Representatives, including: Michael Lee, Eli Crane, Rand Paul, Andy Biggs, J.D. Vance, Dan Bishop, Lauren Boebert, Josh Brecheen, Tim Burchett, Matt Rosendale, Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Anna Paulina Luna, Barry Moore, Mary Miller, Ralph Norman, Andy Ogles, Mike Collins, Paul Gosar. Most of them are associated with the far-right wing of MAGA and former US President Donald Trump, known for his statements in favor of Russian interests.
