The best of people confront the worst - Scorsese about Ukrainians
American director and producer Martin Scorsese spoke at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the performance of "Shchedryk" at the Carnegie Hall concert hall in New York
A festive concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Mykola Leontovych's performance of "The Generous" was held on December 4 in the Carnegie Hall concert hall in New York.
The musical event was organized jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
Legendary director Martin Scorsese, in particular, spoke during the ceremony.
"We have gathered to support the Ukrainian nation, its people and its art," Scorsese began.
The director said that the Ukrainians, who are now resisting Russian aggression, "deserve the deepest gratitude from everyone."
"They deserve everyone's deep gratitude, because they give us something really valuable, which is an example of how the best of humanity confronts the worst," Scorsese emphasized.
The world-famous piece for the choir "Shchedryk" was created by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych at the beginning of the 20th century. After the tours of Oleksandr Koshyts' choir in European countries in 1919 and in the USA in 1922, Shchedryk became known not only in Ukraine, but also throughout the world.
After the popular American composer of Ukrainian origin Petro Vilgovsky wrote a number of English lyrics to the composition Shchedryk in 1936, his English version of Carol of the Bells became one of the most popular Christmas carols in the world.
