Sweden does not rule out producing weapons for Ukraine - Swedish Defense Ministry
Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist hasn't ruled out the possibility that Sweden may produce weapons for Ukraine. He made the comments after a conference of donors for Ukraine in Copenhagen.
SVT reports the story.
The publication reports that on August 11, defense ministers of 17 countries met in Copenhagen during a donor conference for Ukraine. One of the participating countries was Sweden. At the meeting, three main areas of long-term support were defined. It was about military training, demining and weapons production.
They note that the production of weapons for Ukraine can be carried out in several countries. First of all, artillery systems are needed. According to Peter Hultqvist, Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic have already indicated that they can help in the production of weapons. Sweden can also contribute to the production of weapons.
"It's not something I'm ruling out, but it's too early to say. We're involved in all three dimensions (three directions of aid to Ukraine - Ed.) in a positive way, and ultimately it remains to be seen how we'll bring it together," he said.
It is also planned to create a fund where countries will be able to contribute money for the production of weapons in Ukraine. They add that earlier Sweden has repeatedly provided weapons to Ukraine. Among other things, thousands of anti-tank shells were sent to the country.
The next meeting will be held in September. Then the 26 participants of the donor conference must make more specific decisions regarding the three directions.
