This is evidenced by the latest ARD DeutschlandTrend poll conducted by the infratest dimap sociological firm.

A relative majority of 47% (3% more than in February) believe that military assistance to Ukraine is appropriate. Another 16% (1% more) believe that Germany's military assistance is insufficient.

While in February, after the German government's decision to provide Ukraine with battle tanks, the share of those who consider military support for Ukraine to be excessive increased from 26% to 35%, it has now decreased slightly to 31%.

At the same time, the majority of Germans (53%) currently believe that diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine are not sufficient (compared to 58% in February), 33% (+3%) consider these efforts appropriate, while 5% (+1%) believe they go too far. At the same time, 45% of those who support greater diplomacy believe that military support for Ukraine is appropriate.

The overwhelming majority of respondents believe that Ukraine should first of all decide for itself when to enter into negotiations with Russia (73%), while only 21% disagree with this position. As for the sanctions against Russia, the share of German residents who do not think they are sufficient has increased from 38% to 43%, 33% (-4%) consider them sufficient, and only 18% say they are excessive.

Speaking about the end of the war in Ukraine, 1/3 of Germans (35%) believe that Kyiv will have to cede certain territories to Russia, and only a slight majority (54%) disagree with this statement.

The survey was conducted between February 27 and March 1 among 1,311 respondents by phone and online, with a margin of error of 2% for values of 10% and 3% for values of 50%.

  • On March 2, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that peace talks cannot be conducted without Kyiv's participation, and the allies are already discussing with Ukraine the security guarantees it will receive after the end of the Russian aggression.
