Sailed 400 km by boat: 2 Russian men fleeing mobilization are detained in Alaska
Two Russian men fleeing mobilization have been detained in Alaska. They have sailed over 400 km by boat from the village of Egvekinot in Chukotka to the American island of St. Lawrence
This is reported by RBC with reference to Alaska News Service.
On October 4, they landed near the Gumbell village. They have already been moved to Anchorage. To pick them up from St. Lawrence, the Coast Guard had to send a C-130 cargo plane with a team of Customs and Border Protection agents.
"These two people who came from Russia by boat and were detained in Gambell, I understand they are now in Anchorage and are being dealt with by federal authorities. We don't expect a constant flow of people from [Russia] or a flotilla of boats…. It could be an isolated case," state governor Mike Dunleavy said.
ANS notes that in a conversation with local residents, the men explained that they were "running away from the Russian army."
The US Department of Homeland Security is investigating the situation.
