Russia launches Shahed, missile attacks: casualties in Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia, explosions across Ukraine

On the evening of August 26, Russia launched a series of drone and missile attacks across Ukraine. In Kryvyi Rih, a civilian infrastructure facility was hit, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. Casualties were also reported in the Zaporizhzhia region

Explosions in Kryvyi Rih

At 11:21 p.m., Suspilne reported explosions in Kryvyi Rih. 

Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the Kryvyi Rih Defense Council, confirmed the information on Telegram. 

“The news is bad, more details after the all-clear signal. Everyone is already at the scene. Rescue and medical services are saving people,” he wrote. 

At 1:01 a.m., the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Serhiy Lysak, said that a civilian infrastructure building had been hit. A woman was killed and four people were injured as a result of the Russian strike. 

According to Vilkul, five people may also be under the rubble. 

“The rescue operation continues. All emergency, utility and medical services are working,” he added. 

Shortly afterward, the head of the Kryvyi Rih district police department, Yevhen Sytnychenko, said that the death toll had risen to two. In addition, six people, including two children, have sought psychological help. 

The Russian attack damaged houses, shops, a catering establishment, and vehicles.

According to the Regional Military Administration, the death toll has not changed as of the morning.

“Two people were killed in the missile attack on a hotel in Kryvyi Rih that occurred at night. They are a woman and a man,” Lysak wrote.

He noted that five people were injured.

“A 43-year-old woman is in the hospital, she is in serious condition. A 37-year-old man is also hospitalized. He is in moderate condition. Three more victims will recover at home,” added the head of the Military Administration.

According to Vilkul, the woman was taken out from under the rubble.

Lysak emphasized that the fate of two more people is unknown, “They are likely to be under the rubble.”

“In total, 5 people were rescued as a result of the rescue operation. Psychological assistance was provided to 11 people, including 2 children. Rescue operations continue,” wrote the head of the city's defense council.

Air defense active in Kyiv region, debris falls in capital

The Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported that as of 1:16 a.m., air defense was operating in the region against Russian drones. 

At 3:59 a.m., the administration again informed about the air defense operation in the region. 

At about 5 a.m., an explosion was heard in Kyiv. At 7:11 a.m., the Kyiv City Military Administration reported that debris fell on a forest park in the Dniprovskyi district of Kyiv. A forest floor fire broke out over an area of up to 50 m2. According to the administration, there is no information about the victims. Later, they reported that debris fell in the forest park area of the Desnianskyi district. There were also no casualties.

Later, the Kyiv Regional Military Administration added that there were no casualties as a result of the attack.

Consequences of the attack in Zaporizhzhia

At 2:13 a.m., Suspilne reported an explosion in Zaporizhzhia. A minute later, the sounds of the explosion were heard again. Repeated explosions were also heard at 2:40 a.m. 

At 6 a.m., the head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, Ivan Fedorov, wrote that one person was killed and two others were injured in the nighttime Russian attack. The blast wave and debris damaged private houses and set fire to dry grass in an open area.

“The Russians had previously launched seven strikes with unmanned aerial vehicles on the territory of Zaporizhzhia city and Zaporizhzhia district,” added Fedorov. 

Later, the number of casualties and wounded increased, the head of the Military Administration wrote.

“Two dead, four wounded, according to updated information, after a nighttime enemy attack on Zaporizhzhia,” the statement said.

There are four victims in the hospital: 

  • An 86-year-old woman in serious condition due to burns over 54% of her body.
  • A 59-year-old man in moderate condition. 
  • two women, aged 30 and 56, with minor injuries. 

“Two people - a man and a woman - died,” noted Fedorov.

Explosions in other regions

At 3:21 a.m., an explosion occurred in Sumy, and at 3:26 a.m. in Rivne, according to Suspilne. Half an hour later, an explosion also occurred in the Khmelnytskyi region. 

At 4:46 a.m., 5:41 a.m., and 7:36 a.m., Suspilne Khmelnytskyi reported on explosions in the region. 

In the morning, the head of the Khmelnytskyi Regional Military Administration, Serhii Tiurin, said that the attack had caused two private houses to catch fire. A man living in the house was injured.
