Russia will be ready to negotiate when its leadership realizes that it will lose war - Latvian politician Dombrovskis
Former Latvian Minister of Economy Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis told Espreso why some countries are not interested in helping Ukraine resist the aggressor and under what conditions Russia is ready for negotiations
The Latvian politician and economist is convinced that only those countries that feel threatened by Russia's attack understand the need to do everything for Ukraine's victory.
“As a general rule, I would say that the closer you are to Russia, the greater is the understanding of the need to do everything for Ukraine to win. For example, in Latvia we understand too well that if Russia won in Ukraine, the madness would not stop there. Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and possibly Poland would be next. The further you go, the less this understanding is. Of course, there are countries like China and India, which see economic benefits from continuing to buy Russia oil and natural resources, thereby helping to finance this war. Also, even in Europe, there are countries, in particular Serbia and Hungary, that have somewhat different attitudes, unfortunately,” he said.
Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis added that only the feeling of defeat can push Russia to hold negotiations.
“Having a certain understanding of Russia, I would say that Russia will be ready to negotiate only when its leadership becomes convinced that they are about to lose the war. Everything will be decided on the battlefield, I am afraid,” the former minister concluded.
