New Ukrainian Tryzub laser weapon could compete with U.S., UK systems - Defense Express
Ukraine's new combat laser Tryzub matches the performance of the American LaWS and British DragonFire, according to its announced specifications
Defense Express writes about it.
Ukraine's Armed Forces are testing the Tryzub laser weapon under the command of the newly established Unmanned Systems Forces.
The Tryzub boasts impressive specifications for a prototype, with a reported range of 2 km, placing it alongside some of the most advanced laser weapons in the world. For example, the American AN/SEQ-3 LaWS has an effective range of 1.6 km and a power output of 50 kW. Similarly, the British DragonFire, which Ukraine is set to test, has a power output of 55 kW.
Achieving a 2 km range suggests a laser power of around 50 kW, defense experts have noted. At lower power levels, such as 20 kW, the range drops to 1 km, and targeting becomes increasingly reliant on precise beam positioning.
The ability to accurately focus the laser is critical. For example, the DragonFire can maintain beam precision within 23 mm at 1 km. If Tryzub can strike aircraft moving at speeds of 200 km/h at 2 km, it indicates that Ukraine has likely solved the targeting and positioning challenges associated with laser weapons.
- Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine becomes 5th world country to have its laser weapons.
