Ukraine's population drops to 35.8 million - Ombudsman
Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine's population has decreased to 35.8 million people. Forecasts suggest that by 2051, the population could drop to 25.2 million
Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reported the information.
In response to this demographic situation, in 2023, the law 'On Amendments to Some Laws of Ukraine Regarding Ensuring the Right of Servicemen and Other Individuals to Biological Parenthood (Motherhood)' was passed. It provides for state funding to store the reproductive cells of defenders in case of injuries affecting their reproductive functions.
However, it was added that in the event of the death of servicemen, the cells must be disposed of. Therefore, Lubinets proposed including funding for cryopreservation of reproductive cells in the budget. These proposals were incorporated into the state budget for 2025.
"The government should enhance public awareness of the opportunities provided by state medical guarantees and improve legislation on biological parenthood, including amendments to the Civil Code of Ukraine, the Family Code of Ukraine, and the Law of Ukraine On the Social and Legal Protection of Servicemen and Their Families," emphasized the Ombudsman.
- The Economist, citing data from Western intelligence, defense officials, open sources, and the Ualosses website, reported that during the full-scale invasion, 60,000 to 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers may have been killed, with around 400,000 more likely wounded.
