Russian military executes over 110 Ukrainian soldiers in captivity
The Russian forces executed more than 110 Ukrainian soldiers while in captivity. The International Criminal Court is also investigating cases of torture of Ukrainians in detention
Yuriy Belousov, the head of the War Crimes Department at the Prosecutor General's Office, said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
Responding to a journalist's question about ongoing investigations into the murders of 62 Ukrainian soldiers, he clarified, "These cases specifically concern executions during surrenders, totaling 62 cases. However, overall, we have documented over 110 cases of military personnel being executed after surrender in detention facilities, such as Olenivka."
Regarding the execution of Oleksandr Matsiyevsky, who was shot for saying "Glory to Ukraine," Belousov mentioned that the investigation is underway to identify his killers.
"The work is ongoing, but the case is complex. We are gradually narrowing down the suspects. We believe there is potential," said Yuriy Belousov.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is collaborating with Ukrainian investigators to examine allegations of torture and ill-treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russian captivity.
"Torture in detention facilities has become so systematic that it clearly demonstrates it is part of the Russia's policy. These are widespread, not isolated cases. This is the focus of the ICC's attention," Belousov added.
- Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said that 90% of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russia endure various kinds of torture, inhuman treatment and violence.
