Ukraine’s mortality rate triples birth rate, highest globally
In 2024, Ukraine recorded the highest mortality rate globally. Between January and June, 87,655 citizens were born, while 250,972 passed away
NV reported the information, citing data from Ukraine's Ministry of Justice.
In the first half of 2024, 87,655 children were born in Ukraine, which is 9% less than in the first half of 2023 and 1.5 times less than in the same period in 2021.
"More than 187,000 babies were born in Ukraine in 2023, the lowest number since independence. However, 2024 is on track to break this record. By comparison, nearly 207,000 children were born in 2022, and 277,800 in 2021," the report stated.
In 2024, Ukraine recorded the highest mortality rate in the world, at 18.6 deaths per 1,000 people. Between January and June, 87,655 births were registered, while 250,972 people died.
“The demographic situation in Ukraine has turned inevitably negative since the onset of Russia's aggression. While a normal fertility rate is 2.15 children per woman, it was only 0.7 in 2023, and in 2024, it is expected to drop further to 0.6,” the report states.
