Ukraine must resist concessions despite "war fatigue" and anticipate prolonged war - military expert

Serhiy Zgurets, Defense Express CEo and military expert, noted that the Ukrainian strategy for possible negotiations should be based on defense stability and awareness of a long war

He shared his opinions with Espreso TV.

“We recognize that political assessments are increasingly dominating the information space and that there is visible fatigue from the ongoing fighting. However, it is crucial to remember that this fatigue should not lead us to make concessions to the enemy, whose goal is to destroy our country's independence,” Zgurets explains.

According to him, if the Russian political goals do not change, why should they change for Ukraine and its partners.

“We need to ensure the sustainability of defense and find options for conducting combat operations when a war of attrition is more destructive for the enemy than for ourselves. We understand that now Europeans will be looking at the policy of the Americans, how Trump will act in this situation. So far, it is quite difficult to clearly predict the actions of the Trump administration if he wins the election. There may be different decisions, but in any case, even if we take the worst case scenario of pressuring for negotiations and limiting military aid, this does not mean that it will force the Ukrainian side to make such concessions. Therefore, it is the understanding that the war will last for some time, I think we are talking about years, that should be the basis of our strategy based on the possibility of negotiations, as Zelenskyy said,” said the expert and added that negotiations should be preceded by conditions acceptable to Ukraine.

  • Earlier it was reported that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken believes that Ukraine will be able to “stand on its own two feet militarily, economically and democratically” without US support.
  • The US State Department said that when the United States is negotiating with international partners and allies in the context of global security issues, Ukraine remains one of the most important topics.
