Defense Express explains whether Russia and China can build tunnel under Kerch Strait
Valerii Riabykh, a military expert and development director of the media and consulting company Defense Express, said that Russia does not have the funds to build a tunnel under the Kerch Strait
He shared his opinion on the Espreso TV channel.
"Such projects are implemented primarily for commercial purposes, and we have seen this in the construction of similar crossings in different parts of the world. In order to talk about the implementation of the underwater tunnel project in the conditions that currently exist in the temporarily occupied Crimea, they need to have many grounds, and they are currently absent," Ryabykh said.
According to the military expert, Russia currently has no economic feasibility that would attract contractors and partners from China to build the underwater tunnel.
"The Russian Federation does not have the extra funds to raise this multi-billion dollar construction project, which could play an important role. It should be noted that such a tunnel can be no less vulnerable after its construction, but it can be most vulnerable during the construction process. This is more of a project than real plans to build such a tunnel," Riabykh said.
- On June 11, it was reported that the Russian occupation forces had strengthened the defense of the Crimean bridge.
- The Russian forces are also building fortifications near the Kerch Bridge to protect it from Ukrainian naval drones.
