Pentagon: Patriot air defense system in Ukraine was damaged, but has been repaired
The US Department of Defense said that the Patriot air defense system was indeed damaged in Ukraine. However, it has already been repaired
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh shared the information at a briefing.
"I can confirm that one Patriot system was damaged, but now it is repaired and is in full operating order," Sabrina Singh said at a briefing on May 18.
Background
On Tuesday, May 16, Russia claimed to have destroyed a Patriot air defense system in Kyiv with a Kinzhal missile. Ukraine's Defense Ministry jokingly replied that Russia doesn't even need an army to conquer the world, as long as it has a press service. In the evening, CNN, citing its sources, suggested that the system could have been damaged.
At a briefing, John Kirby, Strategic Communications Coordinator for the White House National Security Council, said that he could not confirm reports of alleged damage to the Patriot air defense missile launcher in Ukraine. He added that if the American air defense system was indeed damaged and needed to be repaired outside of Ukraine, the US would help.
