Pentagon overestimates value of aid to Ukraine by more than USD 6 bln. How extra money will be used?
Pentagon says it has overestimated the value of weapons it sent to Ukraine by USD 6.2 billion due to an accounting error. The result is a surplus that will be used for future security assistance packages
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh stated this, CNN reports.
The accounting error occurred because "in a significant number of cases" when the United States transferred weapons, military officials “used replacement costs rather than net book value, thereby overestimating the value of the equipment drawn down from US stocks and provided to Ukraine.”
According to final calculations, the error amounted to $3.6 billion in the current fiscal year and $2.6 billion in the fiscal year 2022, which ended in late September. That is a total of $6.2 billion.
The Department now has additional funds that can be used to support Ukraine as it continues its counteroffensive against Russia. This comes when the fiscal year is nearing its end and congressional funding has begun to decline.
“It’s just going to go back into the pot of money that we have allocated for the future Pentagon stock drawdowns,” said Singh.
She also emphasized that valuation errors will not limit or restricted the size of any of American PDAs or impacted the provision of support to Ukraine.
US assistance to Ukraine
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, the United States has provided Ukraine with about USD 40 billion in military aid and continues to do so. In particular, on June 7, John Kirby, Strategic Communications Coordinator for the National Security Council, said that the United States has sufficient funding to support Ukraine in 2023.
On June 9, the United States announced a military support package for Ukraine worth more than USD 2 billion. It includes ammunition for Patriot air defense systems, HAWK air defense systems, missiles, artillery shells, Puma drones, and more.
Later, the US announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth USD 325 million, which includes additional ammunition and armored vehicles.
In addition, United States partners have allocated additional humanitarian aid in the amount of USD 205 million to support the Ukrainian people.
