Pentagon confirms transfer of HARM missiles to Ukraine
The US has officially stated that it has provided Ukraine with HARM high-speed anti-radar missiles.
This is reported by CNN.
The Pentagon confirmed for the first time that the US had sent missiles to Ukraine designed to combat Russian radar systems.
According to US Deputy Defense Secretary Colin Kahl, several missiles were sent to Ukraine. He did not say exactly how many were provided or when they were delivered. Kahl only clarified that Ukraine received a high-speed missile of the AGM-88 type (HARM).
HARM missiles have a range of more than 48 km. The missiles can be used to target Russian anti-aircraft radar systems, such as the S-400, which have made it very difficult for the Ukrainian Air Force to operate over large swaths of Ukrainian airspace. The missiles can also hit counter-battery radars that Russia uses to target Ukrainian artillery.
Kahl noted that the missiles were sent in recent packages, but none of them mentioned HARMs.
"In the near term, we’ve been doing lots of things to make Ukraine’s existing air force stay in the air and be more capable," Kahl assured.
