Niger's President calls on world to help restore constitutional order, as country may fall under Russian influence
Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been held by the junta since the coup d'état, has called for international assistance to restore constitutional order in the country
This was reported by The Washington Post.
"In our hour of need, I call on the U.S. government and the entire international community to help us restore our constitutional order. Fighting for our shared values, including democratic pluralism and respect for the rule of law, is the only way to make sustainable progress against poverty and terrorism. The Nigerien people will never forget your support at this pivotal moment in our history," said Bazoum.
He also said that otherwise the entire central Sahel region could fall under Russian influence through the Wagner PMC, whose brutal terrorism was fully demonstrated during Russia's war against Ukraine.
"Boko Haram and other terrorist movements will surely take advantage of Niger’s instability, using our country as a staging ground to attack neighboring countries and undermine peace, safety and freedom around the world," Bazum emphasized.
What is known about the coup d'état in Niger
On July 26, a military coup took place in Niger, as a result of which President Mohamed Bazouma was blocked in the palace. The military claimed to have overthrown the democratically elected president of Niger, announcing on state television that they had put an end to the government due to the deteriorating security situation in the African country.
Ukraine has condemned the coup d'état in the Republic of Niger. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically rejected any attempts at a violent, illegitimate change in the constitutional order.
