Ukraine's finance minister calls for increase in military levy
Serhiy Marchenko, Ukraine's Minister of Finance, has stated the need to increase the military levy to raise an additional UAH 121.8 billion for the security and defense sector
He stated this in a column for LB.UA.
Marchenko pointed out that Russia’s military budget is nearly three times larger than Ukraine’s.
“The war is relentless and ongoing. We need to meet new funding requests from the Defense Forces and other military departments, totaling 500 billion UAH,” Marchenko wrote.
He added that increasing the military levy is one way to secure these additional funds.
"International experience shows that countries which make decisive and tough decisions promptly tend to win wars," said the head of the Ministry of Finance.
He pointed out that during both World Wars, nations also significantly raised income tax rates.
“In times of war, everyone should contribute to the military levy. This is a shared responsibility among individuals, small businesses, and large corporations,” Marchenko stated.
He claims that the proposal to increase the military levy addresses the needs of the economy.
“Every hryvnia from this levy will be used to fund our path to victory,” the minister concluded.
