NASAMS, radars, missiles, drones: US State Department shares details on latest US-Ukraine aid

On August 24, the US Department of Defense announced almost USD 3 billion in additional security assistance to Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI): "This USAI package, announced on Ukraine's Independence Day, underscores the US commitment to support Ukraine in the long term – a multi-year investment to strengthen the Ukrainian Armed Forces as they continue to defend their sovereignty in the face of Russian aggression".

The message states that unlike the Presidential Drawdown (PDA), which the Department of Defense continued to use to urgently deliver equipment to Ukraine from Defense Department stockpiles, USAI is the agency under which the United States purchases weapons from industry:

"This announcement is the beginning of the contracting process to provide Ukraine with additional priority capabilities in the medium and long term to ensure the continued protection of Ukraine as an independent, sovereign, and prosperous state. This is the largest tranche of security assistance to Ukraine to date".

The new package includes:

• 6 NASAMS air defense system

• up to 245,000 shells for 155-mm artillery

• Up to 65,000 shells for 120-mm mortars

• Up to 24 counter-battery radars

• Puma unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and support equipment for ScanEagle UAVs systems

• unmanned aerial systems VAMPIRE

• missile systems with laser guidance

• financing of training, maintenance, and support of equipment

The US State Department noted that since January 2021, the US has allocated more than USD 13.5 billion for security assistance to Ukraine. In total, the US has allocated more than USD 15.5 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since 2014.

• It will be recalled that on August 24, on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day, US President Joe Biden announced a new military aid package worth almost $3 billion.

• Also, on August 24, the state budget of Ukraine received 3 out of 4.5 billion dollars. non-repayable grant aid from the US, which they promised earlier.
